Will we see the PC vs Mac ads… in Windows favour?

A good read from FastCompany, (a beautiful online publishing site done on top of Drupal!) on Microsoft finally waking up to proper advertising & marketing?

Here’s the excerpt:

Now Crispin has been handed perhaps its biggest challenge to date: Microsoft. The tech giant stunned the ad world in March when it passed over safer choices like Fallon, JWT, and its agency of record, McCann Worldgroup, and awarded its new $300 million consumer-branding campaign to Crispin. It was an act of courage or desperation, depending on whom you ask. Over the past couple of years, Microsoft’s already problematic reputation in some circles — as the soulless, power-hungry purveyor of lackluster products — has suffered a series of self-inflicted wounds. It spent two years and $500 million on the media blitz around the long-delayed Windows Vista launch, only to see the January 2007 "Wow" campaign, which likened Microsoft’s new operating system to Woodstock and the fall of the Berlin Wall, derided as arrogant and creatively void. Vista itself sold poorly, leading to price cuts of up to 40%. Worst of all, the flop bred a new generation of Microsoft haters. "Microsoft has really lost control of its image," says Rob Enderle, an influential advisory analyst for tech companies including Dell, HP, and Microsoft. And with its two most formidable competitors — Apple and Google — boasting their own consumer cults, that’s the last thing Microsoft can afford to do.

That’s a lot of money…  and if any of ads campaign is as good as the following ads done by Lenovo, then there might still be hope…

Let’s revive the Pepsi vs Coke war of the 80s…

This should be nice to see… provided the ads and stuff coming out of this newly appointed agency is first and foremost, believable and add in funny stuff to counter the Apple ads… That would be entertainment weekly for many of us.

Another video of the Samsung Omnia i900

with one comment

I will be visiting CommunicAsia tomorrow so hope to get a hands on with it.

Samsung has done an excellent job adding a layer of ‘coolness’ to the tilt / accelerometer which Windows Mobile 6.1 does not have built in.

The main turn off for me is the screen resolution… 240 x 400 is not cool man!!!

Do we need another plugin for outlook?

leave a comment »

Is there a resurgence of Outlook or our dependency on offline email client are getting stronger? More and more people’s email are moving into the cloud… plugin for Gmail, Hotmail or Yahoo will be wiser in my opinion.

Now, if only there are APIs to tap into… Is there?

Best thing… it’s open source licensing!!! Anybody can twist, shape and turn it into anything… full stack provided!!! Wow!!! Imagine Google knowing every single part of your life… from your habits online (provided you logged into Google stuff while surfing online…) to the next thing, your whereabouts, what you search or surf on your phone… Man, more advertising dollars coming in and mobile is the next bigger platform.

Android and the Apple iPhone makes the rest of the mobile phone UI looks soooo dated. Where are you Microsoft? A classic example of how dominance slows the out of box thinking…

iPhone… thank you for the inspiration.

This smartphone will an upgraded version of the very popular HTC Touch, and like its predecessor it won’t have a hardware keyboard but instead be focused on its touchscreen.

It will run Windows Mobile 6.1 Pro, but include an updated version of HTC’s overlay for this operating system that makes the device easier to control with a fingertip, rather than a stylus. Called TouchFLO 3D, this will provide animated access to contacts, email, photos, music, weather and more.

HTC will also add a web browser it has developed that’s based on Opera. This has been modified to be easier to use one handed, and (like the iPhone) rotating the device will turn the display from portrait to landscape mode.

A special version of YouTube will be included, and version of Google Maps will work with this smartphone’s GPS receiver.

The Diamond will have a VGA display, which is a much higher resolution than its predecessor (or the iPhone), and a  better 3.2-megapixel camera as well.

Despite the extra features, the upcoming model will be slimmer. Overall it will be 3.9 inches tall, 2.0 inches wide, and 0.42 inches thick  (99mm x 51mm × 10.7mm).

HTC unveiled the tri-band GSM version today with UMTS/HSDPA, but its expected there will eventually be quad-band and CDMA versions with 3G too, and many of these will include Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.0.

Coming this Summer

The HTC Touch Diamond will be available from all major European carriers in June. It will be available later this quarter in Asia and the Middle East.

HTC is somewhat vague about when it will be available in N. America and Latin America, only saying that it will be released in these regions in the second half of the year.

Between five and ten wireless carriers around the world have reportedly already placed orders for this smartphone, and analysts predict 4 million of them will eventually be sold.

This will build on the strength of the original Touch, of which HTC has sold 3 million so far.
